How to play Millionaire

1. What is Millionaire?

The rules are simple! Play the same number of cards as the current play on the table, but with a higher rank. If no one can (or chooses to) play, the pile clears. When the pile clears, the player who cleared it starts the next turn. If you get rid of all your cards, you go out. The order of going out determines your rank for the next game.

2. Card Ranks

Card strength runs 3 (weakest) → … → A → 2 (strongest).

3 < 4 < 5 < 6 < 7 < 8 < 9 < 10 < J < Q < K < A < 2

The Joker is the strongest as a single card, can act as another card, and can also be used in multi-card plays.

3. Basic Special Plays

  • Eight Cut (8-giri)
  • Any play that contains an 8 immediately clears the pile.
  • Revolution (Kakumei)
    • Playing four or more of a kind reverses card strength (Joker excluded).
  • Suit Lock (Mark Shibari)
    • If someone plays a card matching the suit currently on the table, the suit becomes locked; only that suit may be played until the pile clears.
  • Spade-3 Beats Joker (Supe-3 Gaeshi)
    • When a single Joker is played, the 3 of Spades can be played to beat it and clear the pile.
  • Other optional rules
    • Stairs, Stair Revolution, J-Back, Number Lock, Five Skip, Seven Transfer, Ten Discard, etc.

4. Ranks

According to the order of going out, players receive ranks:

Daifugō (Grand Millionaire) → Fugō (Millionaire) → Heimin (Commoner) → Hinmin (Poor) → Daihinmin (Grand Poor)

The set of ranks may vary depending on the number of players.

When ranks exist, the game starts with a card exchange:

  • Daihinmin passes their two strongest cards to Daifugō, who returns any two cards of their choice.
  • Hinmin passes their strongest card to Fugō, who returns any one card of their choice.

5. Other Rules

  • Topple from the Top (To-ochi)
    • If the Daifugō does not finish first, their rank for that game becomes Daihinmin.
  • Forbidden Out (Kinshi-agari)
    • If you go out with any of the following, it is forbidden, and your rank becomes the lowest at that moment:
      • A play that includes the currently strongest rank (Joker; 2 in normal order; 3 during Revolution)
      • Any play containing an 8
      • 3 of Spades used to beat a single Joker

6. How to Play

a. Rule Setup

The player who starts the game (the Owner/Host) sets the optional rules and starts the game.

b. Deciding the First Player

If no ranks exist, the player holding the 3 of Diamonds (♦3) takes the first turn.

c. Daifugō Time

Turns proceed in order from the starting player. Play cards according to the rules and shed your entire hand.

d. Results (Round Result & Total)

The round continues until one player remains. When only one player is left, the finishing order is fixed and the ranks for the next game are set; these ranks carry over to the next round of Daifugō. Total shows the cumulative results so far—aim to win on the Total as well.
